How to drive a car ecologically?

New cars (both trucks and cars) are becoming “greener”. Still, many drivers do not know how to use them to minimize fuel consumption. Below are some tips for people driving passenger cars.

Ecodriving, or ecological driving, is a concept that has been known in the transport industry for years. In trucks, where we actually burn 25-27 l of fuel per 100 km and drive tens of thousands of kilometers per month with each vehicle, savings of a few percent are already noticeable for companies. No wonder that the driving style of drivers is analyzed on an ongoing basis and they can count on hints on what to do to burn less.

Passenger car drivers, especially if they do not use the car all the time, do not have the economic motivation to implement the principles of ecodriving in their everyday lives. However, it is worth changing – if not to save a dozen / several dozen zlotys every month, then to do something for our planet.

Where to start your adventure with ecological driving?

1. Whenever you can – drive at a lower revs in a higher gear.

As a rule, the lower the revolutions, the lower the fuel consumption. Therefore, it is worth eliminating from the habits exceeding 2500 revolutions per minute, and getting used to the fact that we quickly enter higher gears. This does not mean that we should forget about dynamic driving. When accelerating, it is worth depressing the gas pedal to about 3/4 of the depth to be able to change gear relatively quickly.

2. Go for a smooth ride.

Try to avoid standing and rushing constantly. How? To achieve this, it is worth starting to consciously observe your road and be ready for events that disrupt the smoothness of driving before they occur. The simplest example is changing lights. If, instead of approaching them and braking sharply, you start slowly in front of them, so that before you reach the intersection, it glows green again, you will avoid accelerating the vehicle from scratch, which is expensive in terms of fuel consumption.

3. Engine brake instead of idling.

Contrary to what many still say, modern cars use the least fuel without rolling in idle, but driving completely without gas in high gear and slowly braking with the engine. It is worth using this knowledge while going down the hill or driving along the route to a point where we expect potential disturbances in the smoothness of driving.

4. “Listen” to your car.

Start observing the fuel consumption in your vehicle and watch it change depending on your driving tactics. Thanks to this, you will quickly find out what brings you the greatest savings … and at the same time you will start competing with your previous achievements. Such a “race” with oneself can really effectively motivate people to change uneconomic and non-ecological habits.
