A truck properly loaded, that is…?

The shipping company is responsible for loading the truck. This does not mean, however, that the driver or the carrier have nothing to say here. On the contrary.

The load transported in the semi-trailer of the truck must not be too large, too heavy or badly fastened. While the first two issues are rather widely known, the third – not so much. After all, improperly fastened or positioned cargo can not only be damaged, but also reduce the safety of transport.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR LOADING?

The shipper is usually responsible for loading the goods. It is worth knowing, however, that the driver has the right not to accept goods that are loaded incorrectly. After all, in the event of an inspection or some unexpected event on the road, it is he who bears the main responsibility for the fact that the load he transports does not meet the standards or has been incorrectly fastened.

The driver must therefore ensure that the load does not move freely on the semi-trailer and that the fastening means used ensure that it is held in place throughout the journey. Another aspect that an experienced driver will never underestimate is the proper placement of the center of gravity of the load. If we do not take care of it, our car loses its stability and starts to react completely differently during manoeuvres on the road.

There is also no question of the goods not being properly secured against falling out in the case of open cars (e.g. when transporting sand or coal in the so-called tipper.

VOID REDUCTION

However, proper distribution and securing of the load is not the only aspect of a good loading of the truck. It is equally important that the car does not run empty. Therefore, loads should be selected in such a way that those more voluminous but light, if possible, are combined with heavier, but smaller ones.

Such adjustment requires cooperation between the driver and the forwarder, so as to be aware of how much space is actually available in the semi-trailer at any given time. However, each cubic meter of space additionally filled in the truck is a real saving for both the customer and the transport company.

In a situation where the car’s semi-trailer is filled with loads transported to various destinations, it is also worth taking into account our route and placing them, if possible, in such a way that unpacking one does not require removing the others. Again, the experience and cooperation of the driver and the forwarder are necessary here.

COOPERATION AND EXPERIENCE

Cooperation and experience are two key words for success in the transport industry – not only when it comes to effective loading. An experienced driver has no problem determining whether something else will fit in his car, and the forwarder is able to arrange the route in such a way as to minimise “empty mileage”. When both parties add mutual trust to it, the effect can be really impressive.

This is the approach that VEGA focuses on. We talk, share conclusions and thoughts to build understanding, but not walls between drivers and forwarders. We know that’s not the case everywhere. We are aware that this approach requires a lot from both parties. However, we have no doubt that this is the only right way in the transport industry. This is the only way to build the company of the future.
